Russian political analyst: West has no time for South Caucasus now

Russian political analyst Konstantin Kalachev has said that the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) has recently made a statement.

“Proceeding from the CSTO’s statement, it is responsible for Armenia’s sovereign territory within the determined state borders. The CSTO responded that it is responsible for that part of the Armenian border that has been determined. Taking into account that the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is not determined, the CSTO’s responsibility does not begin and does not end anywhere,” Kalachev told the Armenian media, Caliber.Az reports.

 “Accordingly, I can assume that Baku, understanding well that neither Russia nor the CSTO, given that Russia is behind the CSTO, will not interfere, and is trying to push through its interests. That is, Baku acts absolutely consistently, understanding that in this situation, Armenia has to rely only on itself,” he said.

“However, I think that Baku is not ready for a serious escalation or a new war because Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who won the election, does not need a war. He is establishing relations with all the key geopolitical players. What does he need it for? What are the benefits? Who needs this? However, Azerbaijan will put pressure. So, if we talk about escalation, there will be no war. If escalation is a continuation of Baku’s pressure, of course, it will continue putting pressure, because it is leading now,” the political analyst noted.

“It is necessary to understand that the story with the special military operation is dragging on, and the West has no time for the South Caucasus now. The West is ready to communicate and demonstrate that Armenia has an alternative - rapprochement with the West. However, we understand well that in such a situation when there is a problem with the Gaza Strip, there is a problem with Ukraine, Armenia is not in the spotlight,” Kalachev said.
