US Senate passes Act prohibiting military assistance to Azerbaijan
The US Senate passed the Armenia Defence Act of 2023.
Senators voted for a document that does not allow the US president to bypass Amendment 907 to the Freedom Support Act, which prohibits military assistance to Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports citing the Senate’s website.
If the project is adopted by the House of Representatives and signed by the president, the US president will be unable to bypass the 907th Amendment and receive funding to help Azerbaijan from budget allocations for 2024-2025.
According to Amendment 907, the US government is prohibited from rendering assistance to the Azerbaijani official organisations. Section 907 has been suspended by the US president on an annual basis since 2002, in accordance the powers granted by Congress in 2001.
